2006 Aon Build America Awards

The Aon Build America Awards are highly competitive and viewed as the most sought-after honor within the construction industry. Eighteen projects were selected from among more than 80 entries across the country. These projects embody the industry at its best, illustrating how AGC contractors are building America's quality of life.

The 2006 Build America Award Winners include:

Hensel Phelps Construction Co.
Colorado Convention Center Expansion, Denver, Colo.
This addition to the Colorado Convention Center added 1.4 million sq ft of new space to double the center's size and included a new 1,000-space parking garage and a 5,000-fixed-seat auditorium. Hensel Phelps relocated a road and an active light-rail line in a short period of time while maintaining continuous operation of both critical transportation routes. Meetings and conferences were not interrupted throughout construction of this landmark civic building that represents a gateway to downtown Denver.

Shawmut Design and Construction
Trinity Church in the City of Boston, Restoration and Expansion Program, Boston, Mass.
This $28 million project included an exterior and interior restoration of a world-renowned H.H. Richardson-designed structure located in the heart of Boston's Copley Square. The phased program served to preserve the historic structure, integrate new building systems to bring the church up to modern building codes and expand the undercroft to accommodate growing parish program activities.

Artistic Builders Inc.
Stor Self Storage, Austin, Texas
This project consisted of constructing a five-story building that totaled more than 80,000 sq ft. More than seven acres were developed, despite the challenges of fitting the building on the property to meet local codes and working with severe restrictions on cutting or filling the land and stringent impervious coverage restrictions. The storage building consisted of 17,286 sq ft, including a significant wine storage area. This project included habitat studies for endangered species and the installation of a water quality pond to protect water quality.

Douglas E. Barnhart Inc.
Copley Symphony Hall Administrative Offices Remodel, San Diego, Calif.
Construction of the $2.6-million remodel of the San Diego Symphony headquarters required the steel used for the project be cut into small pieces and brought in by hand. No heavy equipment was used on the project and much of the construction debris was carried out using only a furniture dolly. The high-end finishes were given special attention; Barnhart ensured that a seamless transition of the new construction met the historic beauty of the existing structure.

Caddell/Blaine Joint Venture Project
Target Building/Spallation Neutron Source Project/Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.
This $58-million, one-of-a-kind research and development facility stands at the forefront of advanced neutron-based nanophase science and promises to make a significant contribution to technology. There were zero lost-time accidents and constant innovation in techniques for handling sophisticated robotics and electronics. The project finished on time, on budget and was built to high quality-control standards.

Soltek Pacific
Tecate Border Station Historic Renovation & Expansion Project, Tecate, Calif.
The work included for this 19,262-sq-ft expansion and historic renovation project entailed the construction of new facilities and repair and renovation of an existing historic structure located at the U.S. Port of Entry at Tecate, Calif. The work included fences, roads, parking, primary inspection stations, pedestrian processing facilities, offices for government employees and staff, cargo inspection stations and incidental related work.

Palmetto Bridge Constructors (A Joint Venture of Tidewater Skanska Inc. and Flatiron Constructors Inc.)
Cooper River Bridge, Charleston, S.C.
One of the most important projects ever undertaken in South Carolina links the cities of Charleston and Mount Pleasant. The construction comprises major interchange high-level approaches and a 1,522-ft, cable-stayed main span, the longest in North and South America.

Alberici Constructors
8800 Page-Alberici Corporate Headquarters, St. Louis, Mo.
Alberici transformed its own circa-1950s brick office building and large metal manufacturing warehouse into a "green" class-A office space and campus. The newly designed and renovated office achieved a platinum certification, the highest level of LEED certification offered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Barnard Construction Co. Inc.
The Saluda Dam Remediation Project, Lexington, S.C.
The largest ongoing dam project in the United States for the past three years, the Saluda Dam was deemed unsafe in the 1970s, given that Columbia, S.C., was located directly downstream and within the flood plain of a dam failure. A new backup dam was constructed immediately downstream from the existing dam. The project received an excellent safety record and was completed ahead of schedule.

ASI/Cianbro Corporation (A Joint Venture)
Loch Raven Dam Rehabilitation, Baltimore, Md.
The Loch Raven Dam Rehabilitation project strengthened and resurfaced the structure of a high-hazard dam that supplies water to nearly one million residents in the Baltimore area. The project was completed under budget and five months ahead of schedule.

Rentenbach Constructors Inc. and C.T. Wilson Construction Co. Inc.
Rams Head Center, Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Rams Head Center is a multi-use facility constructed on a 4.6-acre site on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Boh Brothers Construction Co. LLC
I-10 Twin Span Bridges over Lake Pontchartrain, Orleans and St. Tammany Parishes, La.
Serving as a vital link in the transportation infrastructure of the New Orleans area, the I-10 Twin Spans over Lake Pontchartrain were damaged by the storm surge from Hurricane Katrina, deterring supplies, water, food and military help from reaching an already damaged and isolated region. The project repaired hurricane damage to the eastbound bridge, removed fallen spans, realigned shifted spans and replaced fallen spans with good spans from the westbound bridge.

Consigli Construction Co. Inc.
Bowdoin College, Chapel Towers Restoration, Brunswick, Maine
Restoration of the twin towers of the Bowdoin College historic chapel entailed repairing damage suffered from weather and age-the original building was constructed between 1845 and 1855. The project demanded the dismantling of the north and south towers and labeling every stone. Approximately 20 to 30% of the stones were replaced with granite from the same local quarry that supplied the original materials.

June 9, 2005 marked the passage of a resolution by the U.S. House of Representatives about the importance of opening the famous Beartooth All-American Highway. T.N. Ward proposed a design-build solution to help the Holy Family University construct a 60,000-sq-ft building to serve the needs of the institution. T.N. The project was completed under budget and on time.

Hensel Phelps Construction Co.
Atlas V SLC 3E Activation, Vandenberg AFB, Calif.
The Atlas IIAS Rocket Launch Facility was designed and constructed in the mid-20th Century and modified in the early '90s to become a state-of-the-art facility capable of supporting cutting-edge rocket technology. The task of updating the facility provided many challenges for Hensel Phelps, but the Atlas V SLC 3E Activation Project successfully adapted and modified the rocket launch facility with a significantly upgraded launch complex for new and larger launch vehicles.

FCI Constructors Inc.
Benicia Wetlands Mitigation, Benicia, Calif.
Due to the loss of the wetlands in the Suisun Bay during construction of the I-680 Benicia-Martinez Bridge across the Carquinez Straits in Northern California, Caltrans purchased a neighboring and presumably contaminated site where FCI Constructors was contracted to create a new, healthy wetland habitat.
