CEO Message — Missing an AGC Meeting May Cost You Money

Year-round training provides tremendous opportunities for AGC members

By AGC CEO Steve Sandherr

If you missed AGC's Midyear Meeting, you missed an opportunity to save your company thousands and possibly millions of dollars. Midyear sessions such as the Economic Issues Forum, California Engine Emissions Mandate and the release of the Contractors' Guide to BIM provided information essential to thrive in today's construction industry. These meetings are just a sampling of the many opportunities members have to take advantage of sessions and educational products on a wide range of topics including legislation, safety and leadership training.

At the Economic Issues Forum, AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson released the latest edition of the Construction Inflation Alert, a resource that provides contractors with the tools to plan when bidding on projects and purchasing construction materials.

This report has proved to save members money and provide valuable economic insights, and it serves as a reliable resource for explaining recent price increases to owners.

Representatives from Caterpillar, ECCO Equipment Corp., Emissions Technology and Granite Construction educated members about the far-reaching economic implications of California's engine mandate.

The California Air Resources Board is working on a new rule that could render millions of dollars of construction equipment worthless unless it is fitted with emissions controls or the engine is re-powered.
"The meeting stressed the importance of educating our local governments about clean air alternatives that satisfy both the environmental and the business needs of our regions," says Bob Lanham, Williams Brothers Construction Co. Inc., Houston, Texas.

We also released the Contractors' Guide to BIM, which educates contractors about Building Information Modeling, including its benefits, tools and applications. The guide is the only resource of its kind, designed for both BIM-experienced contractors and those who are new to the technology. Several AGC members created the guide so that others could save time and money in researching the possibilities.

"This guide will help put members at the forefront of the industry, preparing them for the future," says co-author Les Snyder, Barton Malow, Southfield, Mich.

Looking Ahead

AGC's highly qualified staff has already begun to develop our 88th Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas, March 21-24, 2007. This meeting will provide practical tools to help advance your business. Highlights will include top-notch professional development programs, popular division sessions and access to the industry's hottest news and latest trends. Register today at www.agc.org/2007convention.

Member Training

While our meetings offer vast opportunities, you shouldn't wait until San Antonio to take advantage of our year-round resources.

AGC brings safety training courses to you at locations across the nation and online, including Safety Management Training Courses and Focus Four Hazard Training. These courses teach industry safety best practices to prevent the four most common worksite hazards.

AGC's Construction Financial Management Conference, held annually in October, provides financial professionals in the construction industry with certified Continuing Professional Education classes and programs that help improve your company's bottom line.

AGC's professional development programs offer tools that members can utilize at every step of their careers. Courses such as the Supervisory Training Programs Instructor Training Workshops teach essential skills to train industry leaders, and our management programs provide practical strategies that can be immediately applied on the job site.

AGC will also continue to hold audio conferences that cover hot topics that most impact your businesses. In the past three months, these courses alone have trained nearly 1,500 members. AGC is the only construction trade association that offers this comprehensive line of meetings and services.

We're putting the value in membership. Are you making it count?
